The recent staple of Mazda products has helped the brand rebuild what was a sinking image and firmly establish itself as an aspirational car brand. Even its cheapest car, the Mazda2, has a funky quality about it that instantly makes it likable to the masses and enthusiasts.

The whole ‘Zoom-Zoom’ business might have been cooked up by the company’s marketing boffins, but products such as the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6, which marry stunning good looks and excellent driving dynamics put a good amount of substance behind those flowery words.

In the C-segment, which features entrants such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sylphy as the leading players, Mazda fields the Mazda 3, which, along with the Mitsubishi Lancer, offer themselves as sportier alternatives to an otherwise bland palette of choices. There is little doubt of the Mazda3′s pedigree. In our recent CIMB Autoworld Car Awards 2010, the 3 ran the Corolla very close for the Best Sub-Compact Passenger Car award.

But good as the Mazda 3 may be, it is also eye-wateringly expensive. Prices start at RM114,344.50 with insurance, which is not too bad, but that gets you only the 1.6-litre sedan model. There are more than one manufacturers offering alternatives that displace 1.8 to 2.0 litres at that price. There is no 1.8-litre Mazda 3, but you can have the 2.0-litre version which goes as high as RM139,744.90 if you opt for the hatch – that is almost D-segment pricing.

Still, the slightly higher prices did not seem to deter the brand’s loyal fans, and the 3′s volume in our market is sufficiently strong that distributor Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd is able to build a business case to have the 3 assembled locally in Malaysia. Since January 2011, CKD units of the Mazda3 have been rolling out of Inokom’s plant in Kulim, which also houses BMW’s semi-knocked down (SKD) operations here.

It should be noted, however, Mazda’s investment in the plant is vastly different to BMW’s efforts. Whilst BMW vehicles assembled in Kulim come with fully-welded monocoque frames with pre-painted body panels, the Mazda 3′s body-in-white will be welded and painted locally. As such, there is a higher requirement for jigs and machinery for the Mazda. In addition, the CKD Mazda3 will feature locally purchased parts that add up to 30% of the vehicle’s total component cost.

The Mazda 3 CKD project was hinted to us as early as mid-2009, but it was only today that an official announcement was made. A total of four variants will be available – 1.6 sedan, 1.6 hatchback, 2.0 sedan, and 2.0 hatchback. At the press conference, Dato’ Ben Yeoh, CEO of Bermaz, stated that the CKD units will attack the market with more competitive pricing and higher levels of equipment than before.

Another exciting piece of news is the impending arrival of the Mazda 3 MPS, which features the 2.3-litre MZR blown four-pot direct injection engine sending 255hp and 380Nm to the front wheels via 6-speed manual transmission and a limited slip differential. A ball-park price of RM175,000 without insurance.

MAZDA BAGS THREE AWARDS FOR CIMB PREFERRED & GETACAR’S BEST CARS OF 2009

Best Cars of 2009 is a special award. For the first time in Malaysia comes an award ceremony that will be aired on television via our weekly television show, Getacar, starting this Wednesday the 19th of August on NTV7 at 7.30pm and lasting for 10 weeks, culminating in our season finale, which is a half an our special covering CIMB Preferred’s Best Cars of 2009. After driving countless cars between the months of August 2008-2009, two cars came up tops from Mazda.

Through months of toiling and numerous hard decisions, we came to the decision that these cars truly are the best in class. The Mazda RX8 is the Best Four Door Coupe for 2009 because, quite simply, there’s nothing in the world like it. A unique rotary engine, mated to a fantastic chassis and sporty gearing provides the driver with one of the best

driving experiences money can buy. The fact that the Mazda RX8 costs much less than other coupes in its class also helped it clinch the title. It’s a practical sports car with ample room for four and, partly caused by the facelift, still looks remarkably fresh.

As good as the RX8 is, the Mazda3 was even better. It was chosen as our Best Junior Sports Saloon and, after two days of testing, proudly came home with the most important trophy of all: the People’s Choice, beating everything else in all the competing categories. The special thing about the People’s Choice award is that, unlike the Performance Car award, this trophy is given based on an aggregate score of more than 150 guests and 9 professional judges. The Mazda 3 was, undoubtedly, the undisputed winner, beating cars in all the other categories which included the Audi A6, the Honda City, the Cayman S (which went home with the Performance Car trophy), the Peugeot 308 and 207CC and Ford Focus amongst others. When asked to sum up the Mazda3, most of our guests came up with a one word answer: ‘amazing.’ Small wonder then, why the Mazda3 was chosen as CIMB Preferred & Getacar’s People’s Choice for 2009.

KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda roared into the automotive limelight when its Mazda6 2.5-litre won the New Straits Times/Maybank “Overall Car of the Year 2008″ award. Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop (fourth from left) presenting the Automotive Man of the Year award to Proton Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir (right) yesterday. With them are (from left) New Straits Times Press group editor-in-chief Datuk Hishamuddin Aun, NSTP chief executive officer Datuk Anthony Firdauz Bujang, Maybank CEO Datuk Abdul Wahid Omar and NSTP chairman Tan Sri Mohamed Jawhar Hassan.  The Mazda6 also came out tops in the Executive Car (below RM200,000) category. The guest-of-honour for the night was Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop. Also present was Datuk Aishah Ahmad, president of the Automotive Association of Malaysia. The judging panel, comprising 12 senior Malaysian motoring journalists, unanimously agreed to award the coveted prize to Mazda6 for having a next to perfect balance between performance and comfort, two factors demanded by executive car buyers.

This year also saw the addition of five Special Mention Awards.The winner of the Safety Award is the Jaguar XF, also the top choice in the Premium Executive Car (above RM200,000) category. One of its primary winning points is the pedestrian airbag that sets new standards for automotive safety. The Innovation Award went to Honda Civic Hybrid. It is the first hybrid vehicle in the market to spur a path towards a more environment-friendly automotive sector. The Volvo C30 received the Good Design Award for “leaving a lasting impression and emotional attachment, while having all the sophistication without the complications to the end-user”.
