Outwardly, the new model can be differentiated from the old by the more prominent iteration of Mazda’s five-point corporate nose design that we recently saw on the 3 and facelifted Mazda RX-8 and Mazda MX-5. The gaping lower grille, tinted headlamps as well as the integrated fog lamp and side indicator housing on either sides give the Mazda CX-7 a slightly more imposing look when viewed from the front. The new nose is rather purposeful and has a sporty touch as well.
Along the flanks, Mazda CX-7 2.3 turbo gets new 18-inch rollers. The Mazda CX-7′s rear end styling hardly ever looked convincing and this new variant is no different – the rear looks a tad heavy from most angles, a bit like the Porsche Cayenne in my opinion. The clear lenses for the tail lamps don’t help as well – they manage to look a tad too ‘Max Power’.
As previously mentioned, the new Mazda CX-7 comes with 238bhp on the 2.3 turbo. The engine is derived from the one found in top spec 6s but has been tweaked to comply with Euro 5 emissions requirements as well as being more economical.
Coming in at 1584kg, the Mazda CX-7 isn’t exactly featherweight either even though it is significantly lighter than the old 4WD model. Thankfully, the motor is relatively smooth for a four-cylinder unit, sounding unstressed even if you rev it near its redline.
For the 2.3 turbo model, Mazda claims significant gains in performance and improved fuel consumption numbers thanks to the deletion of 4WD and hence a lighter kerb weight. Previously, the Mazda CX-7 returned a 0-100km/h time of 10 seconds but the new, lighter front wheel drive model returns an improved time of 8.6 seconds.
It’s an efficient transmission that offers a nice space of ratios to exploit the engine’s peaky torque curve even though it lacks the 2.3 turbo model’s sixth gear. As in most cars these days, a ‘+/-‘ manual mode is standard. Like in a BMW, you push the gear lever forwards for a downshift and pull it backwards to change to a higher gear – the more logical orientation in my opinion.
The Mazda CX-7 is yet another model that Mazda says embodies its ‘zoom zoom’ philosophy. Bar the taller seating position, the new Mazda CX-7 is remarkably car-like to drive. The controls are well weighted and the steering precise and direct if a little short of feel.
Hustle the Mazda CX-7 into a corner and you’ll feel that this SUV turns in even better than some family saloons. The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension does a brilliant job of containing roll and unwanted body movements. The tyres cling on well onto the tarmac and the commendable body control encourages spirited driving.
Even the base model here comes with DSC Dynamic Stability Control as standard so you need not worry should you decide to overcook it and push it pass its dynamic limits.
The stoppers feel more than sufficient to haul the Mazda CX-7 down from any speed. As an added bonus, pedal feel is excellent, giving you the confidence to stomp on the left pedal when needed. ABS with EBD is standard. The Mazda CX-7′s overall handling is certainly on par with models like the VW Tiguan and is definitely much better than the Conti models out there.
The new model’s ride feels much improved over the old model’s. The ride is still firm but at least it feels well damped and controlled now.
Inside, the Mazda CX-7 is largely similar as before, which is not a bad thing as the cabin is attractively styled and still feels contemporary in design. The three central circular air vents on the dashboard look especially classy and Audi-like. There are new switches for the standard fit cruise control on the steering wheel that look like afterthoughts.
The dealer fitted display for the reversing camera sitting on the dashboard looks daft and many would have mistaken it for a sat nav unit in any case.
The driving position is comfortable for all body sizes and shapes thanks to a wide range of adjustments for the seat as well as a rake and reach adjustable wheel. A big bugbear though, is the reflections you get on the windscreen on sunny days.
The interior is rather practical as well. Up front, there is a useable glove box as well as an additional compartment below the driver’s armrest. The door bins are large and useable. The boot is also well-shaped and sized to gobble up your barang barang.
Unlike some of the new SUVs around, Mazda hasn’t gone to the seven-seater route for the new Mazda CX-7. The Mazda CX-7′s five-seater cabin is hugely spacious though. Rear passengers are unlikely to complain about any lack of head and legroom.
The Mazda CX-7 is never meant to have off-road capability of a Land Rover but its soft approach will certainly satisfy those who want an SUV body shape but also a driving experience that is more car-like. As an SUV for the urban set, the new Mazda CX-7 certainly has most of the ticks in the right boxes.
With prices now affordable after the updates, the base Mazda CX-7 is now within reach of those who are looking at the VW Tiguan, Audi Q5 or BMW X1 models.
